Bands to bring Sound Relief

Two huge gigs will benefit the victims of recent disasters. Elissa Blake reports.

IT WAS mid-afternoon on what was to become known as Black Saturday when Simon Leach, the guitarist with Little Birdy, stepped outside his tranquil bush home in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, to look at the sky.

"All I could see was dark red. I didn't know what was going on," he says. A neighbour who had been through the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires told him to start packing.

"Then the wind started blowing ash and burning embers into the backyard," Leach says. "From then on, every thought was a serious decision; anything I did could be life-changing. I knew I had to get out of there; the fire was like a tidal wave."

Little Birdy is one of the bands playing for Sound Relief, the biggest benefit concerts ever staged in Australia, at the SCG in Sydney and the MCG in Melbourne, on Saturday, March 14. The all-day gigs include performances from Coldplay, Kings of Leon and Taylor Swift, as well as a host of Australian acts, including some notables who are re-forming for the occasion - Icehouse, Midnight Oil, Split Enz, Hoodoo Gurus and Hunters & Collectors.

Icehouse frontman Iva Davies, whose band hasn't played since 1994, says he was overwhelmed when he first heard about the devastation caused by the nation's worst natural disaster. "It was such a phenomenally powerful force of nature, it was beyond any comprehension," he says, adding that his father was a forester for 42 years and his family grew up with the threat of bushfires in the Riverina.

"We wanted to help in any way we could. I think there are lessons we can all learn about coexisting with nature in this unique environment we live in."

Promoter Michael Chugg says the original impetus for the concert came from Phil Stevens, John Butler Trio's manager, who also initiated the Wave Aid concert in 2005 to raise money for the victims of the Boxing Day tsunami. Chugg called promoter Michael Gudinski in Melbourne and between them they secured the two cricket grounds, moving both the Sheffield Shield final in Melbourne and the AFL NAB Cup so the events didn't clash with the fund-raiser.

Hundreds of people involved in the concerts - promoters, bands, roadies and even the cleaners - are waiving their fees.

Coldplay immediately agreed to do a gig ahead of their concert later that night, as did Kings of Leon. Peter Garrett, federal Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Arts, has been rehearsing with the Oils for the first time in years.

Chugg says: "Jack Johnson called us from his home in Byron Bay saying he'd love to play and Taylor Swift, the highest-selling artist in America last year, announced herself for the Sydney show. We had emails flowing in from bands wanting to drop everything to do this concert.

"There's one thing about musicians and people in our industry: they do give a lot and that's great. Money is one thing they can give but it's also a bit of inspiration and some hope and some passion. It makes people realise they are not alone in this hour of grief and tragedy."

Promoters want to have a live broadcast of the concerts on the day. The Sydney line-up includes Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Eskimo Joe, Hoodoo Gurus, Icehouse, Jet, Josh Pyke, Little Birdy, the Presets, Wolfmother, Architecture in Helsinki and You Am I. Proceeds from Sydney's show will be divided between the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal and the Queensland flood victims.

"The floods in Queensland, which have been quite horrific, have been a bit lost in the tragedy and drama of Victoria, so we wanted to help them as well," Chugg says.

Little Birdy had been rehearsing at Leach's home the week before the fires. All their gear is still there. Leach is checking the fire alerts every hour from Perth and two catteries are on standby to shelter his cats if the fires pick up again. "It's so beautiful up there," he says. "We choose to live in the middle of the bush so we have to make plans. But hopefully it won't happen like this ever again."

SOUND RELIEF

Saturday, March 14, noon-10pm, Sydney Cricket Ground, soundrelief.com.au, 132 849, $75.

Personally I think it's great to see all these musical acts getting involved and trying to bring relief to those in Victoria and North Queensland. What this country saw that week was pretty horrific, fire in the south, flooding in the north. Even though it only really mentions the Sydney gig, I'll probably be switching between both Sydney & Melbourne.

The Melbourne Show has been okay so far.

Nic Cester's singing wasn't very good in some parts, but Jet in general were really good.

Gabriella was excellent, which I am very happy about.

I watched most of both of these, and Melbourne was so much better than Sydney.
I mean, Melbourne had Crowded House, Split Enz, Midnight Oil, Hunters and Collectors, the list goes on.

Sydney show was still okay, loved Coldplay & John Farnham, and Icehouse...but Melbourne was the best for me.
Which doesn't really surprise me Razz coz I hate Sydney, and think Melbourne kicks it's ass in most ways Razz

Chris Martin put everything into his performance, but some of his singing isn't very good.

I felt sorry for Kylie. She was made to sing a song that she couldn't.

My mum watched a lot of it and I think she is a Wolfmother fan now. She likes Wolfmother as well as Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson. She wants Rattlin' Bones now.

Ugh, Kasey Chambers quite possibly has the worst voice ever! I don't know how she wins the awards that she does. Now I love country, but she's just plain crap. There's good whining in country songs(George Strait, Dwight Yoakam, Tim McGraw come to mind) and then there's her.
As you can tell, I don't like Kasey Chambers Razz

I don't think she is plain crap or that she has the worst voice ever. She has more than a voice, she has a soul connection with people and every word she is singing, she is singing from her soul.

Her husband has a better voice.
